Unilever has released a new "plastic reduction" statement, which it hopes will reduce the amount of plastic packaging used by its brands and boost the recycling economy of plastic products.

Unilever: cut plastic use by 350,000 tonnes by 2025, using alternative packaging materials and so on Unilever currently USES about 700,000 metric tons of plastic packaging a year. In a statement, the group said:

Reduce the absolute usage of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 metric tons by recycling plastic packaging distribution mode;

Reduce the use of new plastics by 350,000 metric tons by 2025 by using alternative packaging materials and reducing the amount of plastic in packaging;

Investment in waste recovery and processing infrastructure;

Purchase more recycled plastic materials for packaging;

Increase the proportion of recycled plastic materials in packaging to more than 25%;

Pay to recycle more discarded packaging.

Alan Jope, chief executive of unilever, said that while plastic packaging has brought great convenience to people's lives, it has had a huge impact on the environment. In the future, the group will take corresponding measures on all aspects of recycling plastic, and reduce the application of plastic packaging by introducing innovative and environment-friendly raw materials for packaging and creating a new recycling packaging distribution mode.

Ellen MacArthur, founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a British environmental charity, said it had always been the goal of the organisation to reduce the amount of plastic in people's lives that was unnecessary, push companies to innovate in materials, ensure the sustainability of plastic products and build a sustainable closed-loop ecosystem of plastic packaging. Unilever's announcement is an important step towards building a plastic recycling economy and they are very supportive of the group's decision.

Unilever has always been very concerned about environmental issues. Since the launch of "Less, Better, No" sustainable plastic packaging strategy in 2017, the group has been exploring new business models and strengthening investment in r&d institutions.

Through the Less Plastic project, unilever introduced mobile vending machines for shampoo and laundry detergent filling in southeast Asia and opened product filling stations in partnership with universities and stores, thereby increasing the reuse of Plastic packaging. In addition, they also innovated the dyes used in plastic packaging, allowing black plastic packaging to be screened out by machines for reuse.

Under the No Plastic plan, unilever introduced products such as solid shampoo, cardboard antiperspirant and bamboo toothbrush to reduce the use of Plastic packaging in its products. They also cooperated with Loop, a recycling consumer goods shopping platform, to improve the use of the outer packaging of goods through the packaging recycling distribution mode, and greatly reduce the waste of resources.

Unilever previously proposed that all plastic packaging under the group's brands will be recyclable, reusable and biodegradable by 2025, and the content of recycled plastic in packaging will be increased to more than 25%.
